Yes, a nickname alone can get an account penalised. In Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) an inappropriate nickname or clan name carries a ban of up to 90 days, and the name is changed without asking you. PUBG Mobile’s user agreement bans the same kinds of names but publishes no fixed duration, and the 30-day figure often quoted for “PUBG” comes from the rulebook of PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS on PC and console. Each game is governed by its own document, so the answer depends on which one you play.

Can a nickname get my PUBG or BGMI account banned?
In BGMI, yes: its Rules of Conduct list “Usage of Inappropriate Nicknames and Clan names” as a ban offence. The name is judged like any other behaviour — it is shown to every player in your lobby, so the rules treat it as something you say to all of them.
In PUBG Mobile, the End User License Agreement forbids you to “create a user name or account name” that is obscene, discriminatory, infringing and so on, and it allows the publisher to act against accounts that break the agreement. It does not say how long a name-related suspension lasts. Anyone who gives you a specific number of days for PUBG Mobile is quoting a different game’s rulebook.
How long is the ban for an inappropriate name?
BGMI: up to 90 days. PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS: up to 30 days. PUBG Mobile: not published. Both KRAFTON tables label these figures the maximum penalty period; they do not say every case receives the maximum.
The BGMI figure comes from the penalty table at the end of the BGMI Rules of Conduct, where the row reads “Usage of Inappropriate Nicknames and Clan names — 90 Days Ban (nickname and clan name will be changed without your consent)”. In the same table, inappropriate language in chat is capped at 30 days, so in BGMI a bad name is treated three times as seriously as a bad message.
The 30-day figure comes from the PUBG Rules of Conduct, whose table lists “Use of Inappropriate Names — 30-day Ban”. That document covers PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS, the PC and console game, not PUBG Mobile.
What exactly counts as an inappropriate name?
All three documents ban names that are sexual or obscene, discriminatory, pretend to be the publisher, or use someone else’s trademark. The two KRAFTON rulebooks add a clause that catches most “clever” names: disguising a banned word with swapped letters or extra symbols does not make it acceptable.

The disguise clause matters for decorated names. Swapping a Latin letter for an identical-looking letter from another alphabet is exactly the kind of change the rules describe; we measured which letters are pixel-identical in our look-alike letter test. Using those letters to dress up an ordinary name is fine — using them to smuggle a banned word past a filter is what gets renamed.
How long can a PUBG or BGMI name be, really?
There is no official figure: neither KRAFTON’s BGMI rules nor the PUBG Mobile EULA states a maximum nickname length. Numbers you see online are observations from individual players, not published limits, and they cannot tell you how a name box counts decorative characters.
What can be said with certainty is how the characters are stored. Most ordinary letters and classic decorations such as ♛ or ༒ take one UTF-16 unit each; emoji take two. A field that counts units will therefore fill up twice as fast with emoji as with symbols. The character counter under our generator stops at 24 — that is a limit of our own tool, chosen to keep results readable, not a rule of either game.
What happens if the game renames me?
Your nickname is replaced by one the game chooses, and a penalty may apply on top. BGMI’s rules say the nickname “will be immediately changed without your consent and/or penalty measures will be taken”; the PUBG PC and console rules say the name is changed “to an arbitrary and different name without prior warning or subjected to penalties”.
Neither document says you receive a free Rename Card afterwards. If your account was suspended, the name change has to wait until the suspension ends.

Are clan names judged by the same rules?
In BGMI, yes — the penalty row names “Inappropriate Nicknames and Clan names” together, with the same 90-day maximum, and says both will be changed without your consent.
Do the rules differ between BGMI and PUBG Mobile international?
Yes. BGMI is governed by KRAFTON’s BGMI Rules of Conduct, which publish penalty lengths. PUBG Mobile is governed by the Proxima Beta EULA, which lists banned kinds of names but no penalty lengths. The categories overlap almost completely; the published consequences do not.
Can I be punished for a name I used before the rules changed?
The documents do not promise an exemption. KRAFTON says it announces changes to its Rules of Conduct at least 7 days before they take effect, so the safest course is to rename anything borderline when a change is announced.
Does reporting a player’s name do anything?
The rulebooks describe penalties, not the reporting process. If a name in your lobby breaks one of the rules above, the in-game report option is the channel the publisher provides.
